This course (the last one compulsory on electronics) aims to complete the basic formation in electronics of the Telecommunication Engineer. Together with general classic concepts in analog and digital electronics, key issues like design methodologies and tools will also be covered.
After this course, the student should be able to design an electronic system of medium complexity and to evalulate different design alternatives, comparing their advantages and disadvantages, and the trade-offs that have to be achieved.
1. Introduction to Electronic System Design (0.2 credits)
2. Analog Systems Design (2.8 credits)
2.1 Operational Amplifier Fundamentals. Linear Circuits based on ideal Op Amps
2.2 Nonlinear Circuits based on Op Amps.
2.3 Signal Generators: Relaxation Oscillators
2.4 Regulators and voltage reference.
2.5 D-A and A-D Converters.
2.6 Noise in Op Amps.
3. Digital Systems Design (3 credits)
3.1 Design of Sequential Subsystem: concepts, computation of operation frequency, problems and answers (clock skew, metastability...), pipelined architectures
3.2 Design of Asynchronous Circuits
3.3 Design of Combinational Subsystem: concepts, implementation approaches (optimization), technology concerns, problems and answers (e.g. races, glitches...), some arithmetic blocks
3.4 Methodologies and Tools. Design with programmable devices (FPGAs)
