Training activities

The training activities considered in this doctoral program are:

Stays at foreign research

Number of hours: up to 480 hours (3 months). Optional.

  1. This activity considers the realization of stays at prestigious foreign research centers that allows students elaborate some aspects of his doctoral thesis. The stays are planned with a duration of 3 months to meet the requirement needed to allow the application of INTERNATIONAL DOCTORAL mention. The stays are planned in the second and third year mainly. It is considered that each doctoral make at least a stay of three months.
  2. PART-TIME STUDENTS To facilitate the realization of stays of part-time students will be planned stays in the summer months considering the holiday period. For part-time students will be difficult to offer a stay of 3 consecutive months, but is the realization of 2 or 3 stays in the summer months for several consecutive years. LANGUAGE: foreign language, mainly English.
  3. The control procedure is divided into two phases:
    1. In a first phase, prior to completion of the stay, the student must submit a plan of work to do during your stay. This work plan must have the approval of his supervisor. In a complementary manner, the student must also attach a letter of admission to the research center where the student is making the stay.
    2. Once done the stay, the student must submit a report in English on the work done and the results obtained. it is intereting is as a result of this collaboration several international publications in English have been generated. The final report of the stay will be replaced by the presentation of articles written.
  4. Mobility actions: In order to promote mobilitythe following actions are enabled:
    1. UPM has a grant program to fund this kind of stay in foreign research centers of prestige.
    2. In each of the research lines considered in the program, and considering the financial support of the active projects in each of the lines, a large part of the travel budget is devoted to finance such stays of students in the program.

 

Defense of the work to the director and other teachers of the research line

Number of hours (60) 20 hours a year. Mandatory: minimum 30 hours (10 hours per year).

  1. Annually students should report on the results obtained in the last year and a brief planning tasks in the following year. Both, the report and the plan must have the approval of the supervisor. In addition to the completion of these reports, the student will be asked to present the results of the program to teachers involved in the same research line to make suggestions for improvement.
  2. PART-TIME STUDENTS In order to facilitate the participation of part-time students will be planned in the afternoon presentations. LANGUAGE: both the preparation of reports and presentation will be in English.
  3. In this activity, the control procedures are as follows:
    1. Monitoring supervisor
    2. Feedback from teachers of the research line in the oral presentation
  4. Mobility Actions: When possible, the presentations will be organized in the same dates when foreign researchers visits our labs. The assistance of external researchers can collect a larger number of views of great scientific value. For this reason, presentations and reports will be in English. In order to encourage this mobility will be available:
    1. A grant program from ETSIT and UPM to promote the mobility of students and teachers.
    2. Travel support from research projects in each of the research lines.


Preparation of articles in journals and at scientific conferences

Hours: up to 180 hours in the three years (60 hours per year, considering 2-3 items per year). Mandatory: minimum 60 hours (20 hours per year, 1 article per year).

  1. Annually students should write one or more scientific articles for publication in international scientific journals or conferences. This activity includes the preparation of the article, and its subsequent presentation at the conference. The supervisor will oversee the preparation of the article and its presentation.
  2. PART-TIME STUDENTS In order to facilitate the participation of part-time students will be planned to congresses early enough to have a work permittion that allows conference attendance. Workshops during weekedns will be particularly interesting allowing greater compatibility. LANGUAGE: both the development of the items and the presentation will be in English.
  3. In this activity, the control procedures are as follows:
    1. Monitoring supervisor in writing this article
    2. Supervision of the presentation in the previous trials.
  4. Mobility: With the aim of promoting international conference attendance, the following actions are enabled:
    1. UPM and ETSIT support for travelling.
    2. In each of the lines considered in the program, and considering the financial support of the active projects in each of the lines, a large part of the travel budget will be devoted to finance such conference attendance.


Personal skills courses for research

Number of hours: 40 hours. Required. A minimum of 15 hours.

  1. In this activity include courses cross-type training activities: literature search, project planning, verbal and written communication, creativity.
  2. PART-TIME STUDENTS In order to facilitate the participation of part-time students will be planned courses mainly in the afternoon. LANGUAGE: the courses are taught in English:
  3. In this activity, the control procedures are:
    1. Responsible for the ongoing monitoring of the work performed.
  4. Mobility: The courses are taught in English to facilitate the attendance of foreign students. Moreover, to the extent of the possibilities, invite outsiders for the delivery of some of the sessions within these courses.


Collaboration and assistance to research seminars

Hours: up to 30 hours. Mandatory minimum of 15 hours.

  1. This activity is intended for doctoral student perform the following actions:
    1. Collaboration with national and international seminars giving lectures (usually in English) on the research work being carried out and the main achievements.
    2. Attendance at national and international seminars. Seminars that explain or discuss issues that are directly related to your thesis objective.
  2. PART-TIME STUDENTS In order to facilitate the participation of part-time students, the seminars will be planned in the afternoon. In the case the student has to travel, we will try to organize this activity during the summer seminars. In this way, the student may use vacation time for greater freedom when traveling. LANGUAGE: in most research seminars the language will be English.
  3. The control mechanisms are:
    1. Doctoral students have to do a brief summary of the talks to attend focused on analyzing the aspects that could be useful in their research.
    2. In the case of having students who submit their work, teachers can evaluate their work assistants providing constructive feedback to improve their thesis work.
  4. Mobility: when possible, the seminars will be on the same dates than the visits of researchers from other centers and whose research is related to the research in which presentations are framed. The assistance of external researchers can collect a larger number of views of great scientific value. In order to encourage this mobility will be available:
    1. UPM and ETSIT support for travelling.
    2. In each of the lines considered in the program, and considering the financial support of the active projects in each of the lines, a large part of the travel budget will be devoted to finance such conference attendance.
