Biography
Carlos A. López Barrio received the Engineering degree (equivalent to an M.Sc.) and the Ph.D. degree in Telecommunication Engineering from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM – Technical University of Madrid), Spain, in 1975 and 1977, respectively.
He is a Full Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering at UPM, Director of the Integrated Systems Laboratory (LSI) Research Group, and Board Member of the Information Technologies and Telecommunications R&D Center (IPTC).
He has held several senior management positions at Telefónica, including Director of Innovation at its R&D subsidiary in Spain (1988–1997), and Deputy General Director of Technology and Networks at both corporate level and the Spanish subsidiary (1997–2004).
Within UPM, he served as Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering during two terms (1982–1986 and 2012–2018), and as General Coordinator of the Moncloa Campus of International Excellence (UPM and Complutense University of Madrid) in 2010. He is currently Director of the ITC Doctoral Area at the International Doctoral School of UPM.
He has participated in and led numerous national and international research projects. His research interests include efficient digital architectures for optimal IC and FPGA implementation, high-performance digital systems, and innovation management.
