- More exciting news! A team composed by members of Children's National Hospital (Washington DC), Princeton Univ (NJ, USA) and BIT-UPM has been awarded first place for pediatric tumor segmentation and third place for meningioma tumor segmentation at the Brain Tumor Segmentation (BraTS) Challenge held as part of the MICCAI 2023 conference at Vancouver, Canada. - A BIT member, Lucilio Cordero-Grande, is included in Elsevier's publicly available database of the 2% top-cited scientists. This list is produced by Stanford University based on the citations received during calendar year 2022. Congratulations Lucilio!!! (4-Oct-2023)
- The ALMA project, which aims to use artificial intelligence algorithms for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of hematological diseases, has begun. This collaboration led by the company Spotlab S.L., and with the participation of several universities and hospitals, aims to investigate new trusted artificial intelligence algorithms to quantify and discover patterns in clinical data and histopathological images, to aid earlier and more accurate diagnosis and predict response to treatment in hematological diseases. - A non-invasive biomarker has been identified to predict the clinical benefit of immunotherapy, based on the integration of monitored radiomic and clinical data, during the first months of treatment with anti-PD-1/PD-L1 monoclonal antibodies in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer. This biomarker could determine in time, and in an objective manner, the effectiveness of the treatment, avoiding toxicities, costs and facilitating the application of alternative treatments if needed. - A new technique based on medical imaging has been proposed to noninvasively estimate the location of a tumor in the surgical position as required for breast cancer surgery. It combines information from the preoperative image with that from the patient's surface, and thus determines the position of the tumor in the surgical position, reducing the costs of the preoperative protocol and, most importanly, decreasing the psychological stress for the patient. - High-quality 3D magnetic resonance imaging of the maternal uterus may provide more reliable diagnosis of fetal anomalies. A study by BIT members combines realistic models of fetal movement and unsupervised deep learning techniques to obtain high-quality visualization of the fetal development, with significant improvements over traditional ultrasound. - An international study confirms that the characteristics that make a particular brain distinguishable from others already exist at birth. Similar to a fingerprint, the connections between different brain areas allow the identification of a baby. Researchers from BIT-UPM have participated in this study with methods of reconstruction and motion correction in functional and diffusion magnetic resonance images, especially critical to obtain quality data in this population as it is not possible to avoid babies movement during the scanning. - Artificial intelligence to predict clinical outcomes in COVID-19 pneumonia using chest CT. A deep learning-based method to evaluate severity and to predict clinical evolution of lesions caused by SARS-CoV-2 has been proposed and evaluated, in collaboration with several hospitals, CIBERES, Spotlab and Brigham & Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School. - New acquisition and analysis methods have been developed specifically for fetal MRI study of the brain development, in collaboration with King's College London. These techniques allow to characterize the formation of white matter connections during the second and third trimesters of human gestation. More information can be found in this scientific paper. - Magnetic resonance imaging can help to predict cognitive evolution in preterm-born children. A study led by King's College London shows that magnetic resonance and artificial intelligence techniques can detect poorer cognitive and language abilities associated with extreme prematurity. - A novel methodology for automated identification and classification of subtle lung abnormalities present in smokers has been proposed by BIT members in collaboration with Brigham & Women's Hospital (Harvard Medical School). Using deep learning techniques to analyze computed tomography images (CT), abnormalities preceding interstitial lung diseases can be identified (and treated) at an earlier stage. - MIT Technology Review has recognized a BIT member, Teresa Arroyo Gallego, as one of the winners of innovators under 35 Europe. This MIT publication recognizes annually innovators who are "changing the future of science and technology". Congratulations!!!
A collaboration between BIT-UPM, the Institut Català de Retina de Barcelona, Parc de Salut Mar and the Radboud Medical University Center in Nijmegen (The Netherlands) has allowed the development of a tool for telemedicine and an algorithm based on Artificial Intelligence that would facilitate the automatic detection of glaucoma from retinographies (fundus images). This technology in glaucoma detection campaigns will facilitate the identification and early diagnosis of this disease, and could help to start treatment as soon as possible avoiding its most devastating consequences. - Again three new doctors in the last few days!!! Juan José Gómez Valverde, Carlos Zorraquino and Polyxeni Gkontra have just defended their Ph.D. Thesis. (29 Sep. 2018).
- Researchers from BIT-UPM and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have developed a portable non-invasive device for white cell monitoring at home. Avoiding the need to draw blood, chemotherapy immunosuppressed patients can be more frequently tested, improving their quality of life and reducing infection risks. - Spotlab, start-up company created by BIT members to generate telemedicine solutions based on mobile telephony and 3D printing, has got the 1st prize in the 14 actúaUPM competition to create the most innovative and disruptive companies (18 Dec 2017)

- Miguel Luengo-Oroz has been nominated as member of the Group of Experts on Artificial Intelligence and Big Data by the Ministry of Energy, Tourism and the Digital Agenda. This group will be in charge of writing an ethical code and a code for good practices on the use of artificial intelligence and big data (17 Nov 2017).
- Two projects by BIT-UPM members, RetiSpot and SiliQonTech, have achieved an award as best business ideas in the XIV actúaUPM competition. RetiSpot aims to create a low-cost microscope for prevention and early diagnosis of ocular pathologies, while SiliQonTech proposes a standard and cooperative platform to build prototypes of innovative electronic data acquisition systems (7 Apr. 2017)

- Three new doctors in the last few days!!! David Pastor-Escuredo, Daniel Jiménez-Carretero and Óscar Esteban Sanz-Dranguet have recently defended their Ph.D. Thesis. (2 Dec. 2015).
