The Department of Electronic Engineering (DIEL-Departamento de Ingeniería Electrónica) of the Technical University of Madrid (UPM-Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) belongs to the High School of Telecommunication Engineers (ETSIT-Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación), located in the North-West University Campus of Madrid ("Ciudad Universitaria). This Department is responsible for undergraduate and graduate education in the areas of analog and digital electronic circuits, digital systems and micro-electronics among others, as a part of several degrees: Telecommunication Engineer (accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology -ABET-, and has full recognition to Masters level), Diploma in Engineering Technology and Telecommunication Services, Biomedical Engineering Graduate and Master in Electronic Systems Engineering.

The Department of Electronic Engineering has a staff of 41 members (teaching, technical and administrative staff) ,  42 graduate students working for their Ph.D. degree and 6 postdoctoral fellows. Some of these students come from Latin America, Germany, India, China, ... About 15 senior undergraduate and graduate students carry out their Final  Projects every year. Teaching activities cover Analog and Digital Electronics, Microprocessors, Digital Systems, Integrated Circuits Designs (Microelectronics), CAD, Nanotechnology, High Speed Electronics, Neurosensory Engineering , Biomedical Image Processing and Technological Innovación (See Teaching/Subjects Catalago).

Research facilities include a variety of servers and PC-based workstations, microprocessor development systems, IC  design stations, IC testing system, speech technology laboratory and recording room, and a variety of basic electronic instrumentation. Available CAD tools comprises a set of public domain and commercial tools (as members of EUROPRACTICE action, funded by the European Commission). A mechanical workshop and printed circuit board design and fabrication facilities are available, allowing a fast turnaround PCB and hardware prototype fabrication.

Research activities are focused on: III-V devices for microwave and optoelectronic applications; design of embedded systems, wireless applications, VLSI design and test, digital architectures, speech synthesis and recognition,  technical aids for de handicapped and biomedical image processing (See Research-Groups).

Research activities are carried out in four Research Groups, recognized by the UPM: HISEL (HIgh Speed Electronics Lab); LSI (Laboratory for Systems Integration), GTH (Speech Technology Group) and BIT (Biomedical Image Technologues). They have strong ties in research and graduate education with the Electronics and Microelectronics Industry located in the region of Madrid, where 90% of the Spanish Information Technology and Defense Industry is based (Alcatel, Telefónica I+D, Indra, etc.). In the area of technical aids for the deaf, the cooperation with the Social Services Ministry has been fruitful for more than a decade. The Department of Electronic Engineering is also very active in a number of EU-funded programs: Framework Programm, EUROPRACTICE, Mobility Actions, ...
