The training methodology designed for the studies of Doctorado en "Ingeniería de Sistemas Electrónicos" (DISE) takes into account the context in which it is developed, and especially two fundamental conditions:

  1. The fast development of science and technology in the field of electronic systems.
  2. The wide range of specialized knowledge required.


The first condition requires the guidance of graduate teaching towards learning processes comprising constantly updated knowledge and the basis that support them, which requires the development of initiative and independent work. The goal is for the students to assimilate the relevant knowledge that will enable him/her to cope successfully with future research or professional work, while adapting to a highly changing technological environment. The second condition determines a careful selection of the topics covered in each subject, properly balancing the scientific knowledge in which the scheduled course contents are established and the state of the art at all times, and focusing on areas of difficulty which is an object of interest in the scientific comunity.

The training methodology comes from a planning of each PhD student's curriculum. This planning is facilitated by the requirement that the students must choose an academic tutor. Student and tutor will have several interviews, starting with an initial one that will determine the training activities in which the student will be enrolled, including occasionally those from external PhD programs suggested by the tutor.

Once enrolled in the program, every student will generate an Activities Document for individualized control. It will register all activities relevant to the development of the candidate according to a regular Doctorate Model UPM. This activities document will be managed in a web application with access control.

Before the end of the first year, doctoral students will develop a research plan that will include, at least, the methodology used and the objectives to be achieved, and the means and time to do planning. Research Plan and detail can be improved throughout their stay in the program. This plan should be signed (electronically) by the director or directors of the thesis.

Annually, the Academic Commission of the PhD program will evaluate the research plan and activities documents for each student, together with reports from the directors. The positive evaluation will be essential to continue in the program. In case of negative assessment, which shall be duly substantiated, the doctoral student must be re-evaluated within six months, for which purpose develop a new research plan. In case the evaluation is negative the second time, the student will abandon the program.

The center responsible for the doctoral program established oversight functions of doctoral candidates through a commitment document signed by the Centre, the doctoral student, tutor and director. This commitment will be signed as soon as possible after admission and must include a dispute resolution process and contemplate the rights aspects of intellectual property that may be generated in the field of the doctoral program.
