Training Activities
The training activities considered in this doctoral program are the following:
Stays in foreign research centers with issuance of final report
Number of hours: up to 480 hours (3 months). Optional.
- This activity considers the completion of stays in prestigious foreign research centers that allow the student to delve deeper into some of the aspects of their doctoral thesis. Stays of 3 months are planned to comply with the necessary requirement that allows the application for the INTERNATIONAL DOCTORATE mention. They are planned mainly in the second and third year. It is considered that each doctoral student undertakes at least a 3-month stay.
- PART-TIME STUDENTS To facilitate stays for part-time students, stays will be planned in the summer months coinciding with the most common vacation period. In the case of part-time students, it will be difficult to carry out a stay of 3 consecutive months, but it is proposed to carry out 2 or 3 stays in the summer months for several consecutive years. LANGUAGE: foreign language, mainly English.
- The control procedure is organized in two phases:
- In the first phase, prior to completing the stay, the student must present a work plan to carry out during the stay. This work plan must have the approval of your thesis director. In addition, you must also attach the admission letter to the research center where you will be staying.
- Once the stay is completed, the student must present a report in English about the tasks performed and the results obtained. In the event that 1 or several international publications in English have been generated as a result of this collaboration, the final report of the stay can be replaced by the presentation of the written articles.
- Mobility actions: With the aim of promoting the realization of these stays, the following actions will be enabled:
- A UPM grant fund will be created to finance this type of stay in prestigious foreign research centers.
- In each of the lines considered in the program, and considering the financial support of the active projects in each of the lines, an important part of the travel budget of said projects will be allocated to finance stays of the students of the program.
Preparation and presentation of thesis reports to professors of each line
Number of hours (60) 20 hours per year. Mandatory: minimum 30 hours (10 hours per year).
- Annually, students must make a report on the results obtained in the last year as well as a brief planning of the tasks to be carried out in the following year. Both the report and the plan must have the approval of the thesis director. In addition to completing these reports, the student will be asked to present the results to the program professors involved in the same line of research so that they can make suggestions for improvement.
- PART-TIME STUDENTS With the aim of facilitating the participation of part-time students, presentations will be planned in the afternoon. LANGUAGE: both the preparation of the reports and their presentation will be carried out in English.
- In this activity the control procedures are as follows:
- Supervision of the thesis director
- Feedback from the professors of the research line in the oral presentation
- Mobility actions: To the extent possible, several joint presentations will be organized and on dates that coincide with visits by researchers from other centers and whose research is related to the line of research in which the presentations are framed. The assistance of external researchers allows for the collection of a greater number of points of view of great scientific value. For this reason, presentations and reports will be made in English. With the aim of promoting this mobility, there will be:
- A grant fund from the ETSIT of the UPM to promote the mobility of both students and teachers.
- The travel bags of active research projects in each of the lines of research.
Preparation of articles in magazines and scientific conferences
Hours: up to 180 hours in the three years (60 hours per year, considering 2-3 articles per year). Mandatory: minimum 60 hours (20 hours per year).
- Annually, students must write 1 or more scientific articles for dissemination in international scientific journals or conferences. This activity includes both the preparation of the article and its subsequent presentation at the congress. The thesis director will supervise the preparation of the article and its presentation through previous essays.
- PART-TIME STUDENTS With the aim of facilitating the participation of part-time students, attendance at conferences will be planned with sufficient advance notice to have a work permit that allows attendance at the conference. Workshops or satellite events held on weekends and that allow for greater compatibility will be especially interesting. LANGUAGE: both the preparation of the articles and their presentation will be done in English.
- In this activity the control procedures are as follows:

- Mobility actions: With the aim of promoting attendance at international conferences, the following actions will be enabled:
- An ETSIT aid fund will be created to finance this type of trip.
- In each of the lines considered in the program, and considering the financial support of the active projects in each of the lines, an important part of the travel budget of said projects will be allocated to finance attendance at conferences.
Personal skills courses for research
Number of hours: up to 40 hours. Mandatory. A minimum of 15 hours is required.
- Data: This activity includes courses with transversal training activities: bibliographic search, project planning, verbal and written communication, creativity.
- PART-TIME STUDENTS With the aim of facilitating the participation of part-time students, courses will be planned mainly in the afternoon. LANGUAGE: courses will be taught in English.

- This activity is intended for the doctoral student to carry out the following actions: - Collaboration with national and international seminars offering talks (generally in English) about the research tasks they are carrying out and the main achievements achieved. - Attendance at national and international seminars. Seminars where aspects that are directly related to your thesis objective are explained or debated.
- PART-TIME STUDENTS With the aim of facilitating the participation of part-time students, seminars will be planned in the afternoon. In the event that the student has to travel, an attempt will be made to direct this activity to seminars organized during the summer. In this way, the student can make use of their vacation period to have greater freedom when traveling. LANGUAGE: in most research seminars, either because the speaker is foreign, or because part of the audience is, the talks will always be in English.
- The control mechanisms are the following:
- Doctoral students must make a brief summary of the talks they attend focused on analyzing the aspects that could be applicable to their research work.
- In the event that students present their work, the assistant professors will be able to evaluate their work by offering constructive comments to improve their thesis work.
- Mobility: To the extent possible, seminars will be organized on dates that coincide with visits by researchers from other centers and whose research is related to the line of research in which the presentations are framed. The assistance of external researchers allows for the collection of a greater number of points of view of great scientific value. With the aim of promoting this mobility, there will be:
- A grant fund from the ETSIT of the UPM to promote the mobility of both students and teachers.
